It’s always been difficult to determine fielding prowess in baseball, and players who perform well at the plate have long seemed to be given bonus points for their offense when their defensive skills are assessed. (This is why statuesque shortstop Derek Jeter has five Gold Gloves.)

While the sabermetric revolution has given us much better tools to evaluate fielding ability, there are still questions about how accurate these methods are. In fact, the two most popular forms of WAR still use fairly different metrics to asses fielding.

So perhaps the best way to judge fielding prowess is combination of sabermetrics and the old eye test. Using bWAR, which assesses fielding with an intricate +/- system, we’ve listed the top ten defensive players so far of 2014. The chances are that one of them is the best defensive player in baseball. With the help of videos, it’s up to your eyes to tell us which one.

10. Leonys Martin
bWar rates Martin the 10th best fielder in baseball and the Rangers CF’s defense has been one of the few bright spots in otherwise dismal season for Texas. The 26-year old Cuban import has also posted his best offensive numbers this year, and is quietly becoming one of the most valuable players in the American League.

Your browser does not support iframes.

9. Dustin Pedroia
It’s been a tough season overall for the Red Sox’s second baseman, who was shutdown for the season yesterday with wrist troubles. But the mighty mite never let his struggles at the plate bleed into his defense, which has been excellent throughout his career.

Your browser does not support iframes.

8. DJ LeMahieu
LeMaieu played all over the infield in the minors, but has settled in at second base as a big leaguer. With Nolan Arenado and Troy Tulowitzki to his right, it’s safe to say the Rockies have the best fielding infield in the National League, if not all of baseball.

Your browser does not support iframes.

7. Jhonny Peralta
There must be something in the water in St. Louis. Peralta is the latest in a long line of players who improve when the come to the Cardinals. The 32-year, a stealth MVP candidate if St. Louis makes the playoffs, is having the best year of his career in large part to his excellent defense.

Your browser does not support iframes.

6. Ender Inciarte
The most obscure name on this list, the 23-year old rookie has been revelation patrolling the middle of the spacious outfield at Chase Field. He’s probably going to need to hit a bit more to keep his spot in Arizona’s crowded outfield, but his glove has certainly been up to the task.

Your browser does not support iframes.

5. Josh Donaldson
The A’s recent implosion has taken some of the shine off of Donaldson’s great season. But he still leads all position players in WAR, and his leather at the hot corner is a big part of that.

Your browser does not support iframes.

4. Zack Cozart
It seems like every year Reds shortstop Zack Cozart gets better with the glove and worse with the bat. So while he might be baseball’s fourth best fielder by bWar, he’s become a real black hole in the lineup.

Your browser does not support iframes.

3. Jason Heyward
If this list was strictly based on runs saves, Heyward would be at the top. However, bWAR rightly adjusts for position, and right is the third least challenging spot to field on the diamond.

Your browser does not support iframes.

2. Andrelton Simmons
Last year Simmons may have had the best defensive season in MLB history. He hasn’t quite been that sharp this year, but the rocket-armed 25-year old is still a wizard at short.

Your browser does not support iframes.

1. Juan Legares
If you are wondering how the Mets are flirting with .500 despite a mediocre, injury-ridden roster and disappointing seasons from Curtis Granderson and David Wright, look no further than the amazing play they are getting from Juan Legares in center. The 25-year old, our pick for the best defensive player in baseball, validates the bWar system by also being their pick.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Who do you think the best fielder in MLB is?

The 30-year old shortstop had started the season slowly, but was slashing .315/.408/.462 in the two month prior to the right oblique strain that only kept him out the minimum 15 days.

“It’d be good to have him back in there, honestly,” Dodgers manger Don Mattingly said before the game. “It changes the lineup from the standpoint of the length of it and the number of guys you have to go through just to navigate it. He’s a dangerous guy in that lineup, so it’s good to have him back.”

While Ramirez had been batting three in the Dodgers lineup before hitting the DL, Mattingly will ease him back into action by spotting him in the five spot for the time being. That should have no effect on his fantasy value.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro has been out since August 19th for a much sadder reason; he was back home in the Domincan Republic dealing with the death of a relative and three close friends in a car accident. He’s set to return from the bereavement list Tuesday and his fantasy owners hope Castro, who been OPSing .912 in August, picks up right where he left off.

Castro has had himself a nice bounce back season after struggling mighty in 2013. He’s the seventh ranked fantasy shortstop so far in 2013, topping Ramirez, among others. Not that many would have predicated that.

Sean Doolittle hits the DL strained right intercostal
A’s reliever Sean Doolittle — he of the .705 WHIP and 13.O Ks per 9 — was having himself quite a season. So much so that Oakland ignored his left-handedness and made him closer when Jim Johnson imploded. Now Bob Melvin and company are going to have to find themselves another closer, at least for the next 15 days.

Luke Gregerson is the best bet for that, spot and is worth an add in all leagues. Ryan Cook did close for the As for a good chunk of 2012 and, after an injured filled first half of the season, has looked quite closer-like. So don’t be too surprised if it’s a ninth inning time share, or even if Cook is given the bulk of the work

Gregory Polanco sent down
The Pirates probably did Gregory Polanco‘s fantasy owners a favor by sending him down to Triple-A yesterday. (And recalling Jose Tabata.) On the one hand, the uber-prospect’s power/speed combo makes him hard to rest. But, on the other hand, he was only hitting .222 with two homers over the past month. The 22-year old will be back in six days, when the rosters expand. And he could well turn it around, as the Cardinals equally shiny prospect Oscar Taveras has been doing over the last couple weeks. But exploring other stolen base options in the meantime would be advisable.

Coming into the season, Trevor Rosenthal was considered a top tier closer, even though he had a grand total of three regular season saves. But his pedigree, and 12.9 K’s per nine innings in 2013, suggested he could give a fantasy team the type of production expected from the Craig Kimbrels and Aroldis Champmans of the world.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way. Rosenthal has only blown four of his 40 save chances for the Cardinals, but his ERA of 3.51 is pretty blah, and his WHIP of 1.438 is downright bad. Now, for the first time this season, there is a real chance St. Louis removes him from the ninth inning.

On Sunday, Rosenthal came into the ninth inning against the offensively challenged Padres with a 7-4 lead. He walked three of the four batters he faced, before being removed by Cards skipper Mike Matheny. Replacement Seth Maness allowed two of those runners to score before getting the 7-6 save. After the game, Matheny gave Rosenthal, who’s allowed 15 base runners in 6.2 August innings, the “dreaded” vote of confidence.

“That’s not happening,” Matheny said of the chatter that Rosenthal might have to find a different inning to pitch in. “He’s our closer.”

Complicating matters is the performance of veteran Pat Neshek. The 33-year old righthander has a .86 ERA and .573! WHIP in 52 innings of work in 2014. We don’t think Matheny is going to replace Resenthal say, tonight. However, the Redbirds are stuck in a pretty tight race for both the NL central crown and the wild card spots. Another bad outing from Rosenthal and it’s going to be tough to justify sticking with him. Things would be even more interesting if Jason Motte — who was so good as a closer for the Cards in 2012 — wasn’t on the DL.

Jenrry Mejia, who grabbed the Mets closer role and solidified their shaky bullpen back in May, had been on a nice and unexpected run until a couple weeks ago. After giving up two runs in a non-save situation this afternoon against the Cubs, the 24-year old has now given up runs in five of his last eight appearances. This happens to coincide with information Mejia is pitching with both a hernia and a bad calf.

He is on the record saying he wants to finish the season before getting the surgery needed for the hernia. But if he keeps giving up runs the Mets — who can still see they playoffs if they squint really hard — will have to think about shutting him down. Jeurys Familia and his 2.02 ERA would take over for closer in the event of a Mejia DL-stint or demotion. As such, Familia is probably worth a speculative add at this point.

The relief pitcher, formally of the Cleveland Indians, was claimed on waivers by the Pirates earlier this week. Instead of pulling him back or working out a trade the Indians just let Pittsburgh have him. They will now be responsible for the remaining $1.1 million on the $4.5 million contract Axford signed with the Indians this offseason.

Axford began the season as the Indians closer. But he was ineffective and Cody Allen took over the ninth inning for the Tribe in May. Axford was decent in a set up role and had lowered his ERA to 3.14 before a bad outing, his last with the Indians, inflated it to 3.91.

Axford, 31, burst onto the scene in 2010 as a 27-year old undrafted free-agent for the Brewers, posting a 2.48 ERA and a 11.8 K per nine rate. The Canadian right-hander was even better in 2011, leading the league with 46 saves and finishing 8th in Cy Young voting. But he struggled in 2012, eventually losing the Brewers closer role.

Axford was traded to the Cardinals in the middle of the 2013 season and pitched well enough for St. Louis for the Indians to sign him to work the ninth.

That didn’t work out and now he is Pittsburgh, where he will be a setup man for closer Mark Melancon.

Troy Tulowitzki is “sick and tired of losing” and he thinks “Something needs to change” with the Rockies. But he says he doesn’t want to be traded.

Those were the big takeaways from an interview the All-Star shortstop, currently on the DL with a hip flexor, did with the Denver Post earlier this week.

Of course you’re not going to tell your hometown paper you want to be traded. Unless you’re some sort of maschists. And Tulowitzki‘s behavior over the last few weeks — including attending a Yankees game as a fan a couple weeks ago — suggests he would very much like to be somewhere else.

Additionaly, Tulowitzki is correct that something needs to change in Colorado since he should bring in quite a haul trading him is probably the best way to shake things up in mile high land.

The 29-year old is leading the NL in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging while playing a stellar shortstop. His contract, which calls for him to $20 million a year until 2019, and then drops down to $14 million for 2020, is perhaps the league’s most reasonable long-term deal. The only thing that keeps him from being the perfect player is his propensity to spend time on the DL.

If Tulo is dealt, here are the best and most likely landing spots.

Not ranked: New York Yankees
Tulowitzki caused quite a stir when he took in that Yankees game. (He was back east seeking a medical opinion on his hip flexor.) And obviously New York has a need for a shortstop, with future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter retiring this year. The problem is they just don’t have a lot of assets in the Bronx. None of their minor leaguers crack the top 50 on the prospect lists, and the big club isn’t exactly beaming with young talent. Maybe they can get something done with a package built on the somehow-still-underrated Brett Gardner, or maybe the Rockies have interest the paper mache arm of Michael Pineda. Overall, we’re just not seeing it.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers
Incumbent shortstop Hanley Rameriz, a free agent-to-be, will be asking for a contract north of what is owed to Tulowitzki. The Dodgers would be wise to let him walk and then work out a trade for Tulo, who is the same age and superior in ever way. LA has three of the top prospects in the game in Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Julio Urias. Two of them plus a second tier prospect — say Zach Lee – is a deal that benefits both teams.

4. New York Mets
The Mets also need a shortstop and, unlike the other Big Apple team, have young assets. They could put together a multi-prospect package headed with either Zack Wheeler, who’s already seen big league success, or fireballing righty Noah Syndergaard, who is one of the top prospects in the game. Not only do they get Tulo, but they do so at the expense of the Yankees, who have dominated the NYC baseball landscape for the past 20 years.

3. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are loaded with prospects — and that’s not even counting Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr, who are already entrenched on the big club. They also need to retool, as their 2013 World Series win is looking more like a fluke every day. Tulowitzki would be a great piece to start (quickly) building around, and they could deal for him and still have young talent left over.

2. Chicago Cubs
Their out-of-nowhere waiver claim of Cole Hamels suggests Epstein and company would be willing to add a big, relatively costly name to their rebuild. They have a fairly entrenched young shortstop in Starlin Castro and any deal with Colorado would depend on them either dealing him back or elsewhere. But if that works out, a package built around two of their big three infield prospects of Addison Russell and Kris Bryant and Javier Baez (who went off against the Rockies this MLB debut this week), probably gets them Tulo.

1. St. Louis Cardinals
There is something about Tulowitzki and his game that screams St. Louis. Trading for him would mean the Cardinals would have to move Johnny Peralta to third and then Matt Carpenter to first or the outfield. But that’s doable when the reward is Tulo at short. The Rockies would certainly require Oscar Taveras. If we were them we’d also want Trevor Rosenthal (to move to the rotation) and serviceable minor leaguer or two.

Darkhorse: Florida Marlins
While he doesn’t usually add salary, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has proved over the years he’s not dead set against it. The Marlins are shockingly still in the playoff race this year, and a 2015 roster which includes Giancarlo Stanton, Tulo and Jose Fernandez would absolutely be contenders. The likely cost would be Christian Yelich or Marcell Ozuna and then at least top prospect Andrew Heaney. But the two-year window it would give the team before Stanton hits free agency to poach another World Series would be priceless.

Today the Cleveland Indians flipped Justin Masterson to the Cardinals for outfield prospect James Ramsey, and if the latest rumors are correct the surprisingly bad Red Sox are trading surprisingly solid John Lackey to the surprisingly almost-average Marlins. Here nine other players, besides Lackey, who should be dealt prior to tomorrow’s trade deadline.

Marlon Byrd
It says something about the evolution of Marlon Byrd and the de-evolution of baseball power that, at 36, Byrd is suddenly one the game’s better home run hitters. It makes no sense for him to stay in Philly, and a whole lot sense for a contender to bet on Byrd being worth the $8 million he will definitely make in ’15 and the $8 million he will likely make in ’16, via a plate appearance vesting option.

David Price
It is unlikely the Rays will ever be able to make a long term commitment to their ace at $25 million a year. Which means they will either trade Price, a ’16 free agent, tomorrow, in the offseason, or at the deadline in ’15. He gets increasingly less valuable as time goes on, and Tampa is a playoff long-shot, so they should do it tomorrow.

Matt Kemp
The relationship between Kemp and the Dodgers seems pretty broken, at this point. Although any team is going to scoff at Kemp’s insistence he play center because he’s just not good at it. His two home runs yesterday suggest he can still play, but the Dodgers are still going to have to eat good chunk of the $107 million Kemp is owed between ’15 and ’19 if they want anything good in return.

Starlin Castro
He’s only 24, but Castro has already amassed a a fair share of baggage, and you could make the argument the Cubs rebuild would be better without him. His contract is reasonable enough if he could just play up to 3/4 of his potential, which he struggles to do. The Cubs have a couple good shortstop prospects behind Castro and the Mets are hot for him. Deal seems logical.

Jon Lester
The best starter who is unequivocally on the market, Lester, a ’15 free agent, has said he would be very open to return to Boston next season if they dealt him at the deadline. So they should deal him at the deadline.

Alex Rios
He would be a more attractive trade candidate if his power hadn’t completely disappeared, but Rios is still hitting over .300 for the season, has good speed and is decent in right. The price is also right; Rios is just owed about $4 million more in ’14, and can be bought out for a million in ’15. The Rangers aren’t going to get a great return for Rios, but they no longer have any need for him so they may as well get something.

Joaquin Benoit
The Padres made out like bandits in the Huston Street trade and if they can get half of that haul for Benoit, who replaced Street in the ninth inning, they will have had themselves one fine trading season.

Ian Kennedy
Pitching in Petco makes every pitcher look good, and Kennedy, who had a rough couple years after almost winning the Cy Young in 2011, has recovered enough of his value this year that he could get something significant from a contender needing an arm.

Cole Hamels
As much as they need to rebuild, the Phillies certainly don’t need to trade Hamels, who just turned 30, has a fairly reasonable long-term contract, and is playing the best baseball of his career. But it they Dodgers were to offer up big time prospects Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Julio Urias it would be difficult for Amaro and company not to send “Hollywood” Hamels back home to Southern California.

On Thursday night, Clayton Kershaw had his scoreless innings streak snapped at 41 innings. It was a home run by Padres third baseman Chase Headley that broke the two-time Cy Young winners string of zeros. The sixth inning blast was one of only three hits and the only run the 26-year old gave up in a complete game win that included 11 Ks.

Kershaw’s was the longest scoreless inning streak since Brandon Webb fired off 42 straight in 2007. Remember Webb? He won a Cy Young for the Diamondbacks in 2006 and then followed it up with two runners up before arm trouble ended his career at age 30.

Webb’s streak was tied for the 13th longest in big league history, making Kershaw’s run of excellence the 15th best. The top ten longest scoreless innings streaks of all-time are below.

10. R.A. Dickey 44.2 New York Mets 2012
2012 was the year of Dickey, with the 37-year old knuckleballer snagging the NL Cy Young. His scoreless streak lasted for much of June and included three shutouts. After giving up five runs in the game that ended the streak, Dickey pitched eight shutout innings in his next start.

7. Sal Maglie 45 New York Giants 1950
A late bloomer who also banned from baseball for five years for jumping to the Mexican league, Maglie’s first full season came in 1950, when he was already 33. He made up for lost time by firing off a 45 inning scoreless streak which started in a complete game in which he gave up seven runs early and included three relief pitching appearances between his regular starts.

7. Doc White 45 Chicago White Sox 1904
Deadball era pitcher Doc White’s 1.78 ERA was only third best in the American League in 1904. His 45 inning scoreless streak during the season was the best, however he had to share the honor with a pitcher who had a much more famous name.

7. Cy Young 45 Boston Americans 1904
That would be Cy Young, the pitcher whom all other hurlers are compared to. The 511 game winning ace also posted 45 straight zeros in 1904, stealing White’s thunder.

6. Carl Hubbell 45.1 New York Giants 1933
Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell did Young and White ⅓ an inning better in 1933. The screwballing lefty had three shutouts during his streak and, like Maglie, also made relief appearances between his regular starts. Baseball was different back then.

5. Bob Gibson 47 St. Louis Cardinals 1968
One could make the case that Bob Gibson 1968 season was the best ever for a pitcher. In addition to his 1.12 ERA and league leading 268 Ks, Gibson pitched five straight shutouts during his June scoreless streak. He had 13 shutouts overall in that year.

4. Jack Coombs 53 Philadelphia A’s 1910
Big jump from Gibson to Coombs, who completely dominated all of 1910 with his 1.30 ERA, 31 wins and 224 Ks. He didn’t give up a home run the entire season and led the A’s to a World Series win with three victories in the Fall Classic.

3. Walter Johnson 55.2 Washington Senators 1913
Coombs scoreless streak record only lasted three years and it should have been no surprise that Walter Johnson was the one to break it. The Big Train had an all-time record 110 career shutouts and had a 38-26 record 1-0 games. Both his wins and lose totals in such games are big league records.

2. Don Drysdale 58 Los Angeles Dodgers 1968
1968 was the year of the pitcher. So much that the baseball lowered the mound for 1969. Drysdale’s contribution to the historic season was his 58 inning scoreless streak, which included six straight shutouts. 1968 was also Drysdale’s swan song; arm troubled ended his Hall of Fame career in 1969 at age 32.

1. Orel Hershiser 59 Los Angeles Dodgers 1988
Twenty years later, another Dodger broke Drysdale’s legendary record. Hershiser’s streak included five shutouts and then a ten scoreless innings’ no-decision during his last start of the season. Although he was scored upon in the postseason, he pitched (and hit) well enough to be the 1988 World Series MVP.

The popular slugger was still basking in the afterglow of leading the Red Sox to a World Series win. In fact, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had the second most jersey sales back in April and Sox closer Koji Uehara and 2013 center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury also made the top 20.

Fast forward to midseason, and things are a bit different in the jersey sales race. Ortiz and Pedroia are still in the top five, despite the Red Sox’s struggles. But now it’s a member of the hated Yankees at number one. We run down the top 20 selling jerseys, including their rank at the beginning of the season, below.

20. Yu Darvish Texas Rangers (ranked 19th in April)
The Japanese import sells out on both sides of the Pacific

19. Tim Lincecum San Francisco Giants (unranked)
Mr. Cy Young Award has become Mr. No-Hitter. (Although the Giants would probably prefer Mr. Cy Young.

18. Hyun-Jin Ryu Los Angeles Dodgers (unranked)
More proof of the power of the Asian market.

17. Bryce Harper Washington Nationals (12)
Eye black sold separately.

16. Manny Machado Baltimore Orioles (10)
New notoriety has led to a down tick in sales.

15. Anthony Rizzo Chicago Cubs (unranked)
At least Cubs fans have one thing to cheer about.

14. Masahiro Tanaka New York Yankees (unranked)
Injury to their rookie ace could derail the Yankees season and fast.

13. Robinson Cano Seattle Mariners (9)
Power might be gone, but his new team is surprisingly good. Still probably not worth the money.

12. Freddie Freeman Atlanta Braves (unranked)
Becoming a legit middle of the order presence, which the Braves really, really need.

11. Andrew McCutchen Pittsburgh Pirates (6)
Quietly putting up better numbers than he did in his 2013 National League MVP season.

10. Miguel Cabrera Detroit Tigers (13)
Even in a down year he still rakes.

9. Yasiel Puig Los Angeles Dodgers (11)
When you want to say “I’m exciting and unpredictable and give my manager ulcers.”

8. David Wright New York Mets (8)
“Captain America” remains a bit hit with the jersey buying public.

7. Mike Trout Anaheim Angles (14)
The best player in the world looks like he will win his first MVP in 2014; maybe then he can also top jersey sales by the end of the year.

6. Yadier Molina St. Louis Cardinals (4)
A Molina jersey will never look right without the corresponding aggressive neck tattoo.

5. Dustin Pedroia Boston Red Sox (2)
Sox fans aren’t blaming the laser show for their team’s dismal season.

4. David Ortiz Boston Red Sox (1)
Nor have they turned on Big Papi.

3. Clayton Kershaw Los Angeles Dodgers (5)
23.1 more innings to break Orel Hershisher’s scoreless struck of 59. If you were starting a team would you rather have Trout or Kershaw? Some question don’t have proper answers.

2. Buster Posey San Francisco Giants (7)
Giants fans always support their main man.

1. Derek Jeter New York Yankees (3)
To his credit, the retiring Hall of Famer has been keeping his head above water lately.

Dropped out of the 20: Koji Uehara, Jacoby Ellsbury, Adam Wainwright, Prince Fielder, Matt Harvey,

After a slow start, the defending National League champion St. Louis Cardinals have been playing better baseball and would find themselves in the wild card play-in game if the season ended today. The Redbirds league-best pitching has been key for their turnaround, however the team just got hit with two pitching injuries that also have a lot of relevance to the world of fake baseball.

After Sunday’s game St. Louis GM John Mozeliak announced that pitcher Michael Wacha was being placed on the the disabled list with a stress reaction in the scapula of his right shoulder. Wacha, the 27th best pitcher in 5-by-5 fantasy baseball this year, had already been scheduled to miss his start Sunday, so a trip to the DL suggests the 22-year old will be out for at least a few weeks.

“Based on what the doctors are telling me, they believe it’s in his best interest to shut down for a little while and let this quiet,” Mozeliak explained. “He’s just too young and too valuable.”

The Cardinals also placed Jaime Garcia on the DL. During his start Friday the left-hander re-aggravated the shoulder injury that had kept him out the first month-and-a-half of 2014. Garcia’s bullpen session on Sunday “didn’t go well,” according to Mozeliak.

There is no timetable for his return and if you are among the 22 percent of Yahoo! league players who own Garcia you may as well cut bait on a pitcher who hasn’t really been healthy since 2011.

(There was some good news in St. Louis this weekend. Ace Adam Wainwright was back to his dominant self Saturday after missing a start.)

If you need to replace Wacha or Garcia on your roster, the man whom the Cardinals ran out on Sunday instead of Wacha might be worth a look. Carlos Martinez was decent in his second start of the year, getting the win with 5 Ks, 3 runs and only four base runners allowed in five innings.

Martinez, 22, has been a top prospect for the last couple years and has good numbers in the minors. He is certainly worth monitoring, especially considering the the magical affect putting on the Cardinals uniform seems to have on pitchers.

Other options to replace St. Louis’s fallen duo should include Angels righty Matt Shoemaker, who followed up his ten K performance earlier in the week with another very nice win against the Rangers last night. Shoemaker is still un-owned in 90 percent of Yahoo! Leagues.

Rays righty Jake Odorizzi (88 percent available) is another interesting add. He struck out ten and allowed no runs and just three base runners in his last start. His ERA of 4.29 is on the high side. However he sports a FIP of 3.15, suggesting better day are ahead. If he just splits the difference between his ERA and FIP and maintains his 10.5 Ks per nine innings he would be a very useful fantasy pitcher.

Closer carousel
Both the Angles and the Rays have threatened to go with the dreaded closer-by-committee. Joe Madden seems a better bet to actually go through with it, and since the Rays don’t win games anyway we’d stay away from their entire ninth inning committee of Grant Belfour, Jake McGee and Joel Peralta. In Anaheim, we still think Ernesto Fierri is a good bet to keep getting saves. Joe Smith’s stuff plays better in the eighth, and closer scion Cam Bedrosian’s fist shot at a ninth inning save resulted in a pretty ugly loss on Thursday. (Which Fierri did play a hand in when he was called in to clean up Bedrosian’s mess and gave up a homer.)

For a while, it looked like Neil Ramirez was going to replace Hector Rondon in Chicago. But Rondon, who was having some arm issues, pitched a clean ninth to pick up a save on Friday. Ramirez’s stats are pretty great. But so, actually, are Rondon’s. Expect Rondon to keep the job if healthy and consider Ramirez borderline own-able as a set up guy.

Mark Melancon has replaced Jason Grilli in Pittsburgh. On the off-chance Melancon is still available he’s a must add.

Fantasy owners who gave Lonnie Chisenhall a Monday spot start yesterday have spent the morning patting themselves on the back . That’s because the Indians third baseman went nuts during his teams 17-7 victory over the Texas Rangers, finishing 5 for 5 with 3 home runs, a double and nine RBIs.

Over the last few weeks Chisenhall has put himself on the radar with his unexpectedly good offense, and now leads the American League with his .385 batting average. While the 25-year old’s “once in a lifetime” day on Monday ranks among the best in Major League history, it doesn’t quite crack the top ten. (We’d put him right at 11.) Those incredible games are listed below, with stats expressed box score style (ABs/Runs/Hits/RBIs.)

10. Willie Mays Giants 5/4/4/8, 4 HRs, April 30 1961 vs. Braves
The Hall of Famer had the best game of his career in the Giants 14-4 win over the Braves. His rival for sixties offensive supremacy Hank Aaron also had himself a day, slugging two homers and driving in all four of the Braves runs.

9. Mike Schmidt Phillies 6/4/5/8, 4 HRs, April 17,1976 vs. Cubs
With Steve Carlton and Rick Reuschel on the mound, this one looked to be a pitchers duel. But the Wrigley wind can humble even the sharpest ace, and played a role in Schmidt’s historic game. After a fly out and a single, Schmidt slammed four straight home runs, including a two run shot in the top of the tenth which clinched a 18-16 victory and one of the wildest game’s in MLB history.

8. Fred Lynn Red Sox 6/4/5/10, 3 HRs, 1 3B June 18, 1975 vs. Detroit
In 1975 Fred Lynn would become the first player to win both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same year. Along the way he had one of the finest games in MLB history, smashing three dingers and driving in ten in the Red Sox 15-1 romp of the Tigers. His one out on his incredible day was a hard line drive to the second baseman.

7. Jim Bottomley Cardinals 6/3/6/12, 2 HRs, 1 2b September 16, 1924 vs. Brooklyn
Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley had himself a pretty good month in day, driving in 12 of the 17 runs St. Louis scored in their 17-3 stomping of the Brooklyn Robins.

6. Joe Adcock Braves 5/5/5/7, 4 HRs, 1 2b vs. Brooklyn
The Braves first baseman posted a second-best-ever 18 total bases in Milwaukee’s 15-7 win over the Dodgers. Hall of famer Eddie Matthews also hit two homers in the game.

5. Tony Lazzeri Yankees, 5/5/4/11, 3 HRs, 1 3B, 1BB May 24, 1936 vs. As
Lazzeri was batting eighth when he set the American League record for RBIs in a game during the Bronx Bombers 25-2 destruction of the As. Lazzeri had actually given his manager a pretty good reason to move him up in the lineup the day before, slugging three homers and driving in five in a double header. He would only have 14 homers for the year.

4. Josh Hamilton Rangers 5/4/5/8, 4 HRs, 1 2B May 8, 2012 vs. Orioles
When Hamilton is hot, he’s hot. And the Rangers slugger was smoldering in the Rangers 10-3 victory over Baltimore. Each of his four home runs was two run shot — Elvis Andrus was on on first base each time. His double was a drive to the right field gap in his third at-bat. Hamilton initially thought he had put that one out too, but it turned to out there was a bit too much top spin for it to leave the yard.

3. Gil Hodges Dodgers 6/5/5/9, 4 HRs vs. Braves Autust 31, 1950
The Dodgers were in the midst of a pennant race when Hodges went off, slamming his first homer against Hall of Famer Warren Spahn and then adding three more. The slugger had been in a 13 game homer-less drought, but ended it in a big way.

2. Mark Whiten Cardinals, 5/4/4/12, 4 HRs, September 7, 1993 vs. Reds
“Hard Hittin'” Mark Whiten lived up to his name in St. Louis 15-2 win over Cincinnati. The center fielder blasted four dingers and tied a major league record with 12 RBIs. It was the second game of a doubleheader, and Whiten had already had an RBI in the first, making him all-time leader in runs driven in for a calender day.

1. Shawn Green Dodgers 6/6/6/7, 4 HRs, 1 2B, May 23, 2002 vs. Brewers
Green, who had got off to a slow start in 2002, went nuts in LA’s 16-3 win over Milwaukee, setting a major league record with 19 total bases. He got his chance to tie the Major League record for homers in a game thanks to Adrian Beltre, who smashed a dinger with two outs in the top of the ninth, bringing Green to the plate.
