In fact, the Ducks didn’t even play varsity level baseball between 1981 and 2008. However they returned to the PAC-12 with a splash, hiring national champion coach George Horton away from Cal-State Fullerton.

So far, so good, as Horton has led the Ducks to three NCAA tournaments in four years. Will 2014 be the year Oregon baseball finally breaks through to the College World Series, and proves themselves worthy in-state rivals for Oregon State, who won back-to-back National Championships in 2006 and 2007?

The Ducks 2014 baseball schedule is below. Conference match ups are marked with an *.

2013 was a big year for Vanderbilt baseball. They had a team record 54 victories against 12 loses and they won their second SEC title in three years under coach Tim Corbin. In the NCAA Tournament the Commodores made it to the Super Regionals, but lost there, denying the program their second second ever trip to the College World Series.

It may be tough for Vandy to repeat this success in 2014, with many key 2013 contributors like SEC Player of the Year Tony Kemp having moved on to the next level. The Vanderbilt 2014 baseball schedule is below. SEC games are marked with an asterisk.

The USC Trojan have twelve national championships, easily the most in NCAA Division One baseball history. However USC baseball has struggled in recent years and haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2005, let alone the College World Series.

In 2013 Dan Hubbs was thrust into the Trojan’s head coach position after Frank Cruz resigned that post just two days before the season began rather than face charges he knowingly exceeded the NCAA’s weekly limit on practice time. Although Hubbs struggled in his first year to a 20 – 36 record he was given a contract extension. With the 24th best recruiting class in the nation, expect USC to begin inching back to their past glory in 2014. Their schedule is below, PAC-12 games are marked with an asterisk.

Stanford won’t have 2013 ace Mark Appel along to help them, as the senior graduated and was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball entry draft by the Houston Astros. The Cardinal do, however, return slick fielding shortstop Drew Jackson who’s a great bet to make big strides in his sophomore year. The Cardinal’s complete 2014 schedule is below. Pacific 12 games are marked with an asterisk.

James Madison University has been participating in collegiate baseball since 1974. They are members of the Colonial Athletic Association. Their nickname is the Dukes and their team colors are purple and gold. The play at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park, a twelve hundred seat facility in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Dukes have won CAA regular season titles in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2011. They were the conference tournament champion in 2008 and 2011 and also made the NCAA Tournament those years. James Madison University advanced to the College World Series in 1983. They have coached by Spanky McFarland since 1998.

JMU baseball was still a relatively new program when it shocked the college baseball world in 1983 by making the College World Series. Although they were one of the last teams selected for the then-thirty-six team NCAA tournament field they swept through the six team regional, including a a 9-4 victory over number one seeded South Carolina. The other teams in the College World Series included Texas (featuring Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi), Arizona State (Barry Bonds) and Michigan (Barry Larkin.) Although JMU was swept out of the CWS after loses to Texas and Stanford their 83 run to Omaha still stands as one of the great college baseball Cinderella tales.

The Dukes have also seen success under long time current head coach Spanky McFarland. In 2002, McFarland led to the team to a 44-16 record and an at-large NCAA bid. Then, in 2006, JMU baseball featured the top two home run hitters in D1 baseball with one of them, Kellen Kulbacki, winning the National Player of the Year award. 2008 saw their first CAA conference championship. They really took things up a notch in 2011 with a 42-19 record, a conference championships and four wins in the NCAA Tournament regional before ultimately falling to South Carolina in the regionals last gme. McFarland has been named CAA conference coach of the year four times and in 2011 was named East Region Co-Coach of the year.

The last two years haven’t been so good for the Dukes, although they did turn a 16-35-2 record in 2012 into a 25-30 record in 2013. With the top rated incoming CAA recruiting class and McFarland’s track record JMU Baseball should be a contender in 2014.

JMU played baseball at Long Field at Mauck Stadium until 2009 when it was replaced by Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial park, a similar-sized but more modern ballpark. In 2010 1815 fans crammed in the twelve hundred seat facility to see JMU play Virginia. These days JMU baseball while crack a thousand fans for certain rivalry games.

JMU baseball has a 1092-670-8 all time record. Eighty-seven JMU players have signed professional contracts, they program has produced twelve Major Leaguers, seventeen All-Americans, ten Freshmen All-Americans, five CAA Player of the Year awards and one NCAA Division I National Player of the Year.

James Madison University players who made the major leagues: Billy Sample, Dana Allison, Mike Hubbard, Larry Mitchell, Rich Croushore, Mike Venafro, Brian McNichol, Scott Forster, Travis Harper, Rich Thompson, Dan Meyer, Ryan Reid

NCAA Tournament appearances: 1983, 2002, 2008, 2011 and four other times.

Conference championships: 2002, 2006, 2011

Texas Christian University baseball’s first year in the Big 12 came with it some growing pains. The Horned Frogs finished the season 29 and 28 and ended their nine season run of NCAA Tournament berths.

Jim Schlossnagle, the 2010 National Coach of The Year, hopes to lead his squad back to the post-season in 2014.
The University of Tampa plays collegiate baseball on the Division Two level. They are in Sunshine State Conference. Their team nickname is the Spartans and their team colors are red, black and gold. The Spartans play at their home games at the University of Tampa Baseball Field, a downtown Tampa facility that seats seven hundred and fifty. They are coached by Joe Urso.

The University of Tampa is the most successful Division 2 baseball program in recent history. In 2013 they won their sixth Division Two national championship since 1992 by defeating Minnesota State 8-2. The team, which finished the year 47-12, was led by Jake Schrader who went 8 for 18 with two home runs during the five game National Finals at the USA National Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Spartans have been nationally ranked every year since 1997.

This was the third national championship for coach Joe Urso, having also led the team to the Division Two title in 2006 and 2007. Urso is an alumni of the University of Tampa and as a player he was the MVP of The Spartans’ 1992 National Championship. (The program also won nationals titles in 1993 and 1998.)

Urso boasts a 567-176-1 career record over his 13 year University of Tampa coaching career. Even in his worst season, 2002, the team went 36-20. Since Urso became coach University of Tampa Baseball has nine Sunshine State Conference Titles (they have 15 overall) and eight NCAA Division 2 Tournament South Regional championships. The Spartans were national title runners-up in 2003. Urso is a three team winner of the National Division 2 coach of the year and an eight time winner of the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year

Five University of Tampa Baseball players were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball entry draft. Left handed pitcher Mike Adams went in the fifth round to the Boston Red Sox, followed by pitchers Caleb Kellogg and Jon Keller who went to the Baltimore Orioles in the 17th and 22nd round respectively. The Atlanta Braves took Schrader in the 27th round and the Chicago White Sox picked Matt Abramson in the 29th. Overall, University of Tampa Baseball has had 68 of their players drafted.

The University of Mississippi has been playing collegiate baseball since 1893. They are currently in the West Division of the Southeastern Conference. Their team colors are Yale blue and Harvard Crimson. Their nickname is the Rebels. They play at Swayze Field in Oxford Mississippi which seats 6500 but has space for about 2000 more in standing room.

Ole Miss baseball has made four College World Series, the most recent being in 1972. They have appeared in the NCAA tournament 18 times, including 11 out of the last 13 years. The Rebels have won the SEC conference championship seven times and the Southeastern Conference tournament twice. They have been coached since 2001 by Mike Bianco, a former college catcher.

While there are records of Ole Miss playing baseball games as early as 1893, 1947 is generally considered the beginning of The University of Mississippi’s modern baseball era. Ole Miss baseball has only had six coaches since then.

Ole Miss baseball made all four of their College World Series between 1956 and 1972, with future Major Leaguers such as Joe Gibbon, Jake Gibbs, Don Kessinger and Steve Dillard leading the way. The also won five SEC titles during that time period.

However the most successful time period in Ole Miss baseball history has occurred since 2001, when Mike Bianco was named coach. Bianco, then 34, had just come off a very nice three year run with McNeese State. He immediately took Ole Miss to the NCAA tournament, an achievement they would then repeat 10 times over the next 12 years. In 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 the Rebels made the NCAA Super Regionals, which is the last game before the College World Series. However each time they failed to advance. Additionally, the Rebels have won an SEC regular season championship and a Southeast Conference Tournament during Bianco’s tenure.

But for all that success, Bianco knows he needs to take his team to the College World Series and beyond to be considered among the greats.

Ole Miss has an intense rivalry with Mississippi State. From 1980 to 2006, the two instate rivals played one non-conference game a year dubbed the Mayor’s Trophy. In 2007 it was upgraded to the Governor’s Cup.

During the Mayor’s Trophy-era Ole Miss led the series 14 games to 13. But it’s been 4 games to 3 for Mississippi State since it has the Governor’s Cup, making it 17 to 17 overall.

Ole Miss’s home stadium Swayze Field (no relation to the late actor, although that would be awesome) is one of the premier venues in college baseball. In 2013, the Rebels averaged 7996 fans for their home game, third in all of college baseball, even though Swayze Field only has 6500 proper seats.

Major League players who went to Ole Miss: Pete Shields, Joe Evans, Doc Wood, Doc Marshall, Gee Walker, Hub Walker, Orlin Collier, Skeeter Webb, Charlie Moss, Joe Gibbon, , Jack Reed, Jake Gibbs, Don Kessinger, Steve Dillard, Tucker Ashford, Pete Ladd, Jeff Calhoun, Jeff Fassero, Laddie Renfroe, Keith Kessinger, Brian Maxcy, Chris Snopek, David Dellucci, Keith Johns, Mickey Callaway, Bobby Kielty, Ryan Bukvich, Matt Duff, Justin Huisman, T.J. Beam, Seth Smith, Matt Tolbert, Chris Coghlan, Matt Maloney, Alex Presley, Lance Lynn, Zack Cozart, Drew Pomeranz, Phil Irwin.
