In fact, the Ducks didn’t even play varsity level baseball between 1981 and 2008. However they returned to the PAC-12 with a splash, hiring national champion coach George Horton away from Cal-State Fullerton.

So far, so good, as Horton has led the Ducks to three NCAA tournaments in four years. Will 2014 be the year Oregon baseball finally breaks through to the College World Series, and proves themselves worthy in-state rivals for Oregon State, who won back-to-back National Championships in 2006 and 2007?

The Ducks 2014 baseball schedule is below. Conference match ups are marked with an *.

The NCAA baseball regionals are part of the NCAA Division 1 Baseball Championship. Every year around Memorial Day a selection committee decides the 64 teams who will make up the NCAA Baseball tournament. 30 teams get automatic births from winning their conference and 34 are selected at-large.

The first step in the process is deciding the 16 teams which will host a NCAA baseball regional. Next, each region will get three lesser seeded teams leading to a double elimination round robin tournament played at the host teams stadium. Eight of the regional hosts will also be given a national seed, meaning they are guaranteed to host again in the next round.

The winner of each regional will advance to a best of three super regional with the winner of that making the eight team College World Series.

The NCAA moved to a the regional format in 1975 and since then Florida State holds the record for most times hosting a NCAA baseball regional with 30. LSU is second at 21 times. Despite their history of getting great seeds and hosting regionals Florida State has ever won a National Championship.

The most people to ever watch a NCAA baseball regional game was Dudy Noble Field on Mississippi State’s campus where, on May 27, 1990, 11,496 fans watched the Bulldogs take on Florida State.

The longest college baseball game in NCAA history, a matchup between the University of Texas and Boston College, took place at a NCAA baseball regional in Austin, Texas on May 30, 2009. UT ended up winning the contest 3-2 after 25 innings.

2013 was a big year for Vanderbilt baseball. They had a team record 54 victories against 12 loses and they won their second SEC title in three years under coach Tim Corbin. In the NCAA Tournament the Commodores made it to the Super Regionals, but lost there, denying the program their second second ever trip to the College World Series.

It may be tough for Vandy to repeat this success in 2014, with many key 2013 contributors like SEC Player of the Year Tony Kemp having moved on to the next level. The Vanderbilt 2014 baseball schedule is below. SEC games are marked with an asterisk.

The USC Trojan have twelve national championships, easily the most in NCAA Division One baseball history. However USC baseball has struggled in recent years and haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2005, let alone the College World Series.

In 2013 Dan Hubbs was thrust into the Trojan’s head coach position after Frank Cruz resigned that post just two days before the season began rather than face charges he knowingly exceeded the NCAA’s weekly limit on practice time. Although Hubbs struggled in his first year to a 20 – 36 record he was given a contract extension. With the 24th best recruiting class in the nation, expect USC to begin inching back to their past glory in 2014. Their schedule is below, PAC-12 games are marked with an asterisk.

Stanford won’t have 2013 ace Mark Appel along to help them, as the senior graduated and was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball entry draft by the Houston Astros. The Cardinal do, however, return slick fielding shortstop Drew Jackson who’s a great bet to make big strides in his sophomore year. The Cardinal’s complete 2014 schedule is below.

James Madison University has been participating in collegiate baseball since 1974. They are members of the Colonial Athletic Association. Their nickname is the Dukes and their team colors are purple and gold. The play at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park, a twelve hundred seat facility in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Dukes have won CAA regular season titles in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2011. They were the conference tournament champion in 2008 and 2011 and also made the NCAA Tournament those years. James Madison University advanced to the College World Series in 1983. They have coached by Spanky McFarland since 1998.

JMU baseball was still a relatively new program when it shocked the college baseball world in 1983 by making the College World Series. Although they were one of the last teams selected for the then-thirty-six team NCAA tournament field they swept through the six team regional, including a a 9-4 victory over number one seeded South Carolina. The other teams in the College World Series included Texas (featuring Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi), Arizona State (Barry Bonds) and Michigan (Barry Larkin.) Although JMU was swept out of the CWS after loses to Texas and Stanford their 83 run to Omaha still stands as one of the great college baseball Cinderella tales.

The Dukes have also seen success under long time current head coach Spanky McFarland. In 2002, McFarland led to the team to a 44-16 record and an at-large NCAA bid. Then, in 2006, JMU baseball featured the top two home run hitters in D1 baseball with one of them, Kellen Kulbacki, winning the National Player of the Year award. 2008 saw their first CAA conference championship. They really took things up a notch in 2011 with a 42-19 record, a conference championships and four wins in the NCAA Tournament regional before ultimately falling to South Carolina in the regionals last gme. McFarland has been named CAA conference coach of the year four times and in 2011 was named East Region Co-Coach of the year.

The last two years haven’t been so good for the Dukes, although they did turn a 16-35-2 record in 2012 into a 25-30 record in 2013. With the top rated incoming CAA recruiting class and McFarland’s track record JMU Baseball should be a contender in 2014.

JMU played baseball at Long Field at Mauck Stadium until 2009 when it was replaced by Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial park, a similar-sized but more modern ballpark. In 2010 1815 fans crammed in the twelve hundred seat facility to see JMU play Virginia. These days JMU baseball while crack a thousand fans for certain rivalry games.

JMU baseball has a 1092-670-8 all time record. Eighty-seven JMU players have signed professional contracts, they program has produced twelve Major Leaguers, seventeen All-Americans, ten Freshmen All-Americans, five CAA Player of the Year awards and one NCAA Division I National Player of the Year.

James Madison University players who made the major leagues: Billy Sample, Dana Allison, Mike Hubbard, Larry Mitchell, Rich Croushore, Mike Venafro, Brian McNichol, Scott Forster, Travis Harper, Rich Thompson, Dan Meyer, Ryan Reid

NCAA Tournament appearances: 1983, 2002, 2008, 2011 and four other times.

Conference championships: 2002, 2006, 2011

College World Series appearances: 1983

Texas Christian University baseball’s first year in the Big 12 came with it some growing pains. The Horned Frogs finished the season 29 and 28 and ended their nine season run of NCAA Tournament berths.

Jim Schlossnagle, the 2010 National Coach of The Year, hopes to lead his squad back to the post-season in 2014. But to do so he will have to get through a tough-as-ever Big 12 schedule, which includes matchups against national powers Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Below is TCU’s baseball schedule. All game times are Central.

The recruiting process for college baseball can be intense and cut-throat. This is because Division 1 college baseball programs have only 11.7 scholarships to divide among their rosters of thirty to thirty-five student athletes. D2 programs have nine, NAIA teams have 12 and D3 programs don’t offer scholarships.

So there is really two things going on in the College Baseball recruiting process. First, you want to get asked to join the team. Second, you want to try to get the most scholarship money as possible from a fairly small pool.

The NCSA is an organization that helps high school baseball players with the college recruitment process. Any potential recruit should check out their website and use it as a resource. Here are some frequently asked questions about college baseball recruiting.

Should I play travel baseball?
College baseball programs want to see a potential recruit playing both high school baseball and travel baseball in the summer. Travel baseball is ultimately going to be more important in most program’s evaluations. That is because the competition level is going to be higher. It’s also because travel baseball takes place in the summer when the college baseball season is over, allowing the coaches to take in the games themselves. However don’t overlook high school baseball. College baseball programs will still pay attention to your scholastic performances and also use your high school baseball career to gauge your potential as a teammate.

Are academics important?
Yes. First good grades show that the recruit is responsible. Secondly, a college coach doesn’t want to have to deal with a player who might struggle with a university course load and may even become ruled academically ineligible. And, thirdly, remember that D1 schools have only 11.7 athletic scholarships to spread among thirty to thirty-five players. So baseball programs try to get their players money in other ways and having good grades and strong standardized tests in high school make it easier for them to find you alternative scholarship money.

What kind of baseball video should I make for coaches?
The most important thing a student athlete can do in a video he makes for recruitment purposes is to show off his skills. While some coaches will occasionally request game footage, what they really want to see is a player’s ability to repeat a skill — such as his swing or his pitching motion — over and over again. And that should be the centerpiece of any baseball video made for college coaches.

Should I go to college camps or showcases?
It is recommended that high school student athletes go to two to three college camps and one to two showcases a year. The student-athlete should pick what showcases to attend based on what college programs he wants to get the attention of, and should take advantage of showcases which will feature representatives from those college. Camps are a good way to impress college programs that already have you on their radar. The downside to this strategy is it can be quite expensive, with camps and showcases running between a couple hundred and a up to thousand dollars depending on their length and reputation.

One final point. Just because it is late in the recruiting game and you haven’t heard from any of the programs you are looking at don’t give up. Many top high school recruits will end up entering the Major League Baseball draft, thus opening up a spot and/or scholarship money at the college they would have attended if they didn’t go pro. This also creates a trickle down effect that could potentially open up late spots and/or money at baseball programs well down the collegiate food chain.
